Preparing for Chase the Sun 2026? To help you get started on the packing, we’ve put together a Chase The Sun kit list including clothing, nutrition, tools and first-aid items that are essential for any coast-to-coast cycling challenge.

Whether you’re taking on a coast-to-coast challenge like Chase The Sun or gearing up for a different cycling challenge, having the right kit can make the difference between an unforgettable day and a long struggle.

Riders doing Chase The Sun often experience changing weather and many hours in the saddle. The right kit will keep you comfortable, self-sufficient and allow you to get the most out of the day.

Essential clothing

Bib shorts

Comfort is king on long-distance rides. Invest in bib shorts with a high-quality chamois designed for endurance riding. What feels comfortable after 30 miles can feel very different after 150. If you have space, pack an extra pair you can change into if the first pair become uncomfortable.

Cycling jersey

Choose a jersey with multiple rear pockets for easy access to snacks and nutrition. For RidePlus+ and All-in packages, jerseys and gilets will be available to pick up at event HQs on Friday evening.

Mid layer

Even during summer events, a mid layer can be useful when it’s cooler in the morning and evening, or if you get damp if it rains. This could be a gilet or long sleeve jersey. Marino wool is a particularly good material to take as it will keep you warm even if it gets wet.

Arm warmers and leg warmers

Early morning starts are often surprisingly cold. Removable arm and leg warmers are lightweight and easy to pack.

Waterproof jacket

As we all know, carrying a waterproof jacket on a long bike ride in the UK is a non-negotiable. Weather can change quickly during a coast-to-coast ride so they’re extremely important to safety and comfort.

Gloves

Comfortable gloves reduce hand fatigue and improve grip during long hours on the bike. If you’re someone that easily gets cold hands, you might consider packing lightweight gloves and a warmer pair too.

Cycling socks

Choose moisture-wicking socks designed for cycling.

Helmet and cap

A helmet is another non-negotiable! A helmet cap is handy in the morning and evenings when it’s a bit chilly. They’re also easy to carry in a jersey pocket.

3

Nutrition and fluids

Food and electrolytes

Long-distance events require consistent fueling. Carry a mix of real food and products such as bars and gels that you’ve already tested during training. Remember, we’ve teamed up with VOOM to offer you a FREE VOOM TASTER PACK. Don’t forget to claim yours! VOOM nutrition is the perfect way to fuel your coast to coast adventure. Looking for more guidance? See our webinar on how to fuel for Chase The Sun.

Water bottles

Carry at least two bottles. You can find bottle refill spots in your Chase The Sun route guide.

4

Bike essentials for your saddle bag

In case of punctures

Carry at least two spare tubes, even if you’re riding tubeless, as well as tyre levers and a mini pump. It’s a good idea to pack a puncture repair kit too.

Multi-tool

A compact multi-tool can solve many common mechanical issues encountered during endurance rides, or allow you to change your setup. See our webinar on How to perfect a bike fit.

Chain Link

A spare quick link takes up virtually no space and can save a ride-ending mechanical problem.

Electronics

Mobile phone

An obvious essential. It goes without saying…a fully charged phone remains one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on the Chase The Sun kit list.

GPS cycling computer

A reliable GPS device will ensure you stay on course throughout the day.

Power bank and charging cables

Battery management is crucial during long-distance rides like Chase The Sun as the event will likely be longer than a typical GPS device and phone and bike light lasts. Make sure you pack the cables required for each device.

Front and rear lights

Bike lights are an essential safety item on this Chase The Sun kit list. As well as early morning and late evening, they’re useful in low visibility conditions such as fog and rain.

Identification

Carry identification and emergency contact details at all times.

Health and first-aid items

First-aid

It’s always a good idea to carry some plasters, antiseptic wipes and pain relief. If you have periods, remember to pack spare menstrual products as well.

Sun protection

You’ll also be exposed to a whole day of UV. Therefore, sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses are highly recommended.

Try not to use untested equipment on event day. Training rides should be used to confirm that your clothing, nutrition and bike setup work together comfortably.

Further advice

Enjoy the preparation and good luck for event day.
