This 21st December, we’re celebrating the Winter Solstice with a special UK virtual cycling get-together for the Chase The Sun community!
Whether you’ve completed a Chase The Sun cycling challenge before or are dreaming of your first one, this is your chance to connect with others and enjoy a magical winter ride.
Together we’ll be marking the year’s shortest day, and celebrating the Sun’s powers as the days begin to lengthen again and the countdown to mid-summer sunrise begins!

What is the Chase The Sun Winter Solstice Cycle?
This is a fun, casual and Christmassy cycling event. Hop on your road bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes, adapted bikes, cargo bikes, tandems, penny farthings…whatever bike you own and join in for a winter solstice cycle.
This is a chance to come together and celebrate our shared love of cycling challenges and the Chase The Sun spirit — even if we’re miles apart.
After your ride, share your photos on social media and tag us. We’ll be awarding a prize for the best photo, so get creative! Sunset selfies, scenic trails, golden-hour landscapes – anything that captures the beauty of your winter cycling challenge.

When: 21st December – ride anytime between sunrise to sunset
Where: Anywhere you ride — streets, trails, countryside
How to participate:
1. Go for a ride at anytime, anywhere you choose, on the winter solstice of 21st December
2. Capture your ride in a photo or two.
3. Share your favorite shots on social media and tag @Chasethesuncycle for a chance to win a prize. Get a bonus entry for following us on Instagram, and use the hashtags #solsticecycle and #chasethesuncycle.

What is Winter Solstice ?
The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. After the solstice, the days finally start getting longer again, giving us more daylight to start training for Chase The Sun!
Historically, the winter solstice has been celebrated worldwide with bonfires, feasts, festivals and dancing. It marks the return of longer days and the hope of Spring.
Looking for fun facts about the winter solstice?
1. Another name for it is Yule and it is one of the oldest celebrations in the world.
2. The word solstice comes from Latin ‘Solstitium’ which means ‘sun stands still’.
3. Stonehenge is aligned with the winter solstice and the sun sets between the great stones, believed to symbolise the ‘rebirth of the sun’..
