By signing up to the Macmillan Ride Plus+ Chase The Sun package, you’ll help improve the lives of people living with cancer in the UK. To kick start your fundraising efforts, we’ve put together some top tips to help prepare you for your unforgettable fundraising challenge.

6 TOP TIPS TO FUNDRAISE:

  1. Start with your “why” – People don’t just donate to rides, they donate to reasons. Be clear (and honest) about why you’re taking on Chase The Sun and why Macmillan matters to you. Maybe you’re riding for yourself or someone else who’s been supported by Macmillan, maybe you believe in making sure no one faces cancer alone. Whatever your story, share it early and often – it’s what turns interest into donations:

  1. Set your fundraising page up early – Even if the ride feels a long way off, get your fundraising page live as soon as you can. Early donations build momentum and it shows others that your charity cycle is already supported. Top tip: add a photo of you (and your bike) and update your page regularly as training ramps up. Include the highlights and the lowlights as you train. People love following the journey. We recommend using a Just Giving page, and Macmillan have a template page ready for you to use, so it is quick and easy to get this started.

  1. Make it personal when you ask – A generic social media post or page is fine, but personal messages work better. Don’t be afraid to message friends, family or colleagues directly and explain why this fundraising challenge matters to you. You’re not asking for a favour, you’re inviting them to be part of something meaningful.

  1. Get creative with fundraising – Alongside your coast to coast challenge, you could reach your fundraising target by: a) Hosting a coffee morning or bake sale, b) Selling unused kit or gear, c) Matching miles to money (e.g. £1 per mile ridden in training)… These all add up and having a variety of ‘calls to donate’ helps keep your Chase The Sun journey visible.

  1. Share the highs and the hard bits – Training for a coast to coast ride isn’t always glamorous. Sharing tough rides, early starts, or wobbly moments makes your journey relatable and interesting. It reminds people just how big this charity cycle is, and why their support can help you overcome the challenges.

  1. Say Thank You – A simple thank you goes a long way. Thank donors publicly (if they’re happy for you to), send personal messages where you can, and let people know how close you are to your target. After the ride, share how it went, especially that sunset moment at the finish. It closes the loop and shows the impact of everyone’s support.
