The route is on normal public roads and occasional tarmac paths – this is a ride intended for typical Road bikes.

There are no Gravel or off-road sections.

Wait – not riding on the longest day? Indeed, we are tailoring to the local climate, as the middle of June is notoriously rainy and cloudy in Japan’s mountains, so there is little chance of seeing a Sun to Chase! On the sage advice of our local ride organisation partners we have instead chosen late-May as an (almost) longest summer day, with better likelihood of fine riding weather.

In terms of day length – There is but a few minutes (13 to be precise) in it… you will depart at sunrise around 4.30am, aiming for sunset at approx 18.45pm.

We have a few more details of venues along the way to finalise, so the actual definitive GPX route data will be issued to registered riders in early 2027.

We can say the planned route will offer options from a standard distance of around 225km with approx 3,000m elevation, also with an extended extra section to reach up to 260km & 3,700m elevation. These options cater for a range of abilities and endurance to succeed against the Sun, and it will be possible to switch routes to your preference based on your progress on the event day.

The ride will depart from the harbourside within Tokyo district, overlooking sunrise over Tokyo Bay. Riders will reach a coastal finishline to watch the evening sunset over Suruga Bay.

The precise start and finish locations will be confirmed when the full route is revealed before full registration and entries / packages open for payment in mid-October 2026.

The route finishes in Suruga Bay, your aim is to arrive to see the sunset over the sea at the end of your ride.

A celebratory drink, snacks and your finisher gift and Chase The Sun Japan medal will be presented at the finish HQ.

Riders purchasing a Tour package will be transferred to their overnight hotel in nearby Numazu.

For riders with Event entry only, as the timing of sunset is around 18.30hrs, it would also be feasible to make your way back via high speed train to Tokyo city late in the evening. Some trains allow bicycles to be carried on this line.

If there is sufficient demand, our event partners are also considering organising an optional bike transfer service to deposit your bicycle at the route finish HQ for collection again in Tokyo the following morning. Pricing for this service is TBC.

The route does climb upwards from the coast to reach the lakes surrounding the base of Mt Fuji – but there is no required ascent of Mt Fuji itself.

The second half of the routes generally descends back towards the finish coastline.

Overall, we are aiming for a total elevation of between 3,000-3,700m across the whole route, which is comparable to other Chase The Sun rides.

Yes – you can. While we have inclusive holiday tour packages available, if you prefer, you or your group can arrange your own travel, accommodation and trip itinerary yourselves and just pay for an standard Event entry to Chase The Sun.

Cost for event entry only is 31,590 Japanese YEN (~ £149) per person.

If you would like more information on hotels nearby the start / finish locations, our local organiser team can offer some suggestions if you email on:
